Testing the Waters Consortium: Monitoring for Action Event

Private Island on the Thames and Jubilee Rivers, 4 November (10:00 - 15:00)

Following the formation of the Testing the Waters Consortium at the UK River Summit, we are convening a highly targeted in-person event designed to move the sector from discussion to direct action and honest collaboration. Held right on the riverbank on a private island, near Windsor, this meeting is intentionally intimate (limited to 40 people) to level the playing field and prioritise the human factor over faceless data sets.

The Strategic Why

This is a proactive, solutions-focused gathering that brings together individuals who typically only interact under regulatory or confrontational circumstances. The goal is to establish the relationships and trust necessary to address the most sensitive operational barriers head-on, specifically focusing on the non-sewage pollutants and the crucial issue of land access necessary for effective river stewardship (Section 82). We are creating a neutral, collaborative space where major water quality stakeholders can present as collaborators, not competitors. There will be representatives from Proteus Instruments, Xylem, In-Situ and ClearWater Sensors with more to be announced.

On the Agenda: A Holistic Approach

The heart of the day is the panel discussion, 'It's Not all about Sewage: Looking at the River as a Whole,' - Shifting the focus from reactive to proactive policy in regards to Section 82. Panellists include Hannah Gunter (Proteus Instruments), Angus Fosten (In-Situ), Matt Mowlem, (ClearWater Sensors) and Wilson Philips, Windsor River Watch. The Chair is Karma Loveday from The Water Report. We are delighted to also feature:

  • Tim Palmer (Environmental Farmers Group): Discussing the critical challenge of land access and practical engagement with landowners.

  • Wilson Phillips (Windsor River Watch): Sharing a successful example of a holistic approach to local water quality monitoring.

The event will also feature a working lunch followed by workshops incorporating lessons learned from the morning panel addressing questions such as where could costly mistakes be avoided and what should the legislation have been? This meeting is an essential next step in building the "standardised approaches" necessary to ensure citizen data drives national policy and real-world results.

Support from YETI, In-Situ, Proteus, ClearWater Sensors and Lakedown Brewing Company.

“The Consortium is all about bringing experts together from all over the industry. Expertise in theory, methods and the all-important lived experience of the opportunities and challenges associated with monitoring water quality. Water is at the heart of our environment and people are at the heart of protecting it. We want to foster a collaborative and open dialogue to all those involved, from industry to the every day, helping to pave the way to a sustainable future for our blue planet.”
— Hannah Gunter, Proteus Instruments
“The River Summit highlights that water is very much part of the fabric of our communities and uncovers the damage being done to our waterways. But the festival isn’t about lamenting the state of our water, it’s about bringing people together to enable change today and drive greater awareness for generations to come”
— James Cuthbertson, Trustee
“The UK River Summit is a vital gathering for anyone who cares about the health of our rivers. It brings together a refreshing mix of people - from policymakers to the public to performers - all with a shared determination to see real change. At Orvis UK, we are proud to be part of that. This year’s summit showed just how powerful collaboration can be, the conversations were honest, challenging and filled with optimism.

A huge well done to Claire Zambuni, the supporters and sponsors, for delivering such a thoughtful and inspiring day. The UK River Summit is more than an event; it’s helping shape a national movement and the momentum coming out of this year’s summit felt stronger than ever.”
— Aaron Rawling, Trustee
“River Action is delighted to support Claire Zambuni as a partner for the UK River Summit. The past year has seen yet another stark warning that pollution and water shortages threaten our rivers, wildlife, health and economy. Time is running out. We must bring together leading thinkers and decision makers to agree how to implement solutions with the necessary political backing. River Action will be hosting panel discussions on two urgent topics. Firstly, how to end sewage pollution for profit by restructuring water company finances and governance to operate for public and environmental benefit. And secondly, how to transition from wasteful farm pollution through river-friendly agriculture and food systems that reward farmers and feed the nation. Panellists include leaders from industry, government, regulators, academia and campaign groups. Together we aim to move the discourse from one of blame and fear to one of action and hope. No more excuses, greed or short termism. We support the UK Rivers Summit asking for commitment and investment in solutions for our collective future, now.”
— James Wallace, Trustee
